FRIZZ! It is the bane of our existence. What is it about our hair that can get so out of control and make it look like we have a permanent electric shock?? While there are so many factors (humidity, curl pattern, bad product, etc..), there truly are things we can do to combat it! Let me share my top six ways to help out frizz! 1. SULFATE FREE SHAMPOO It's no secret that I am an avid ingredient nerd. It's starting to get to the point that I am skeptical of almost everything. Alas though, there are shampoos out there we can use that are better than others. For frizz purposes (because I could go on all day for many reasons on whats bad for all reasons), make sure there are no sulfates in your shampoo! Sulfates are harsh detergents found in laundry detergent among other things we don't use on our bodies. Sulfates strip your hair of moisture just so you can get enough suds to create that shampoo Mohawk we all loved as kids. (If you really enjoy detailed info on such things, click here for a video from my 22 year old self where I share detailed info on sulfates, play interesting spa like back ground music, and literally show you a bag of the actual ingredient. :]) 2. CONDITIONER! This one is especially for guys! In general, I know most women are fans of conditioner. However, whoever you are, if you are experiencing frizz, no matter who you are, you need to be using a good moisturizing conditioner. Frizz is lacking moisture. Just like a raisin in the sun, our hair will dry up due to lack of moisture. (Click here if you want to see a more recent video of me showing you how to properly condition your hair!) 3. PROPERLY TOWEL DRY YOUR HAIR Do you attack your head with your towel thinking you'll really get the moisture out, only to look in the mirror and find tangle city? OR do you do the standard old school tying up your hair in the towel? (Although I must say, for nostalgia I do love that look of circa 1995, towel up in the robe laying out your pink fuzzy curlers you're about to put in.) Properly towel drying means squeezing the water out, rather than attacking your hair. Click here to see me show you the proper way to towel dry your hair.
5. THE HEAT VERSES NO HEAT DEBATE Yes, flat ironing and curling your hair daily will tame the frizz. But is that keeping your hair in it's healthiest state? No! Heat drys out your hair more, therefore when you wear your natural hair, that glorious frizz we're avoiding is going to look even drier. It's certainly a personal decision, but if you are trying to show love to your natural hair, keep the heat to a minimum. 6. Keratin Treatments There's no doubt that Keratin treatments are amazing for dealing with frizz. This is a salon service that basically de-poofs the hair without making it completely straight. It is a chemical (a lot have a small amount of formaldehyde in them, not enough to harm, but if you are a fellow ingredient nerd like me, it is something good to know) that smooths out the frizz for roughly 3 months and slowly graduates back to your natural hair texture. It's a great option because unlike a relaxer, it's not permanent. As a stylist, I have a lot of people who get it done just as spring is starting so the warmer months don't get them with the frizz. Then they book round two for three months after. Then of course I have people who do it year round. It's all in how tame you want your hair to be. The beauty nowadays is they have an express version!! Not as expensive as the full version, the express lasts about six weeks and is a great service to regularly get for fighting frizz! I hope you found these tips helpful! Let me know in a comment which one you are going to try or if you have already tried any of them. I hope you all have a beautiful weekend! With love and hair, Megan

I started only buying sulfate free shampoo fairly recently! I love the way it makes my hair feel! I still suffer from a little frizz, so I will have to try some of the other tips, like leave-in conditioner!

I love using leave in conditioner to help with frizz. I have naturally straight hair which is nice because the maintenance is so easy, but frizz still happens!

I recently jumped on the trend of using my conditioner as a mask *before* I shampoo - seems to help with giving the desired softness / shine / frizz-free hair I want without the danger of weighing it down or looking greasy quickly. AND then I add the leave-in conditioner before drying. Thanks for these tips, Megan!

I always need the reminder to try avoid using heat products, my natural inclination is to go towards them for quick results and not think long term results.

I'm allergic to shampoos with sulfates, so it is always nice to find a new one that is sulfate-free and actually helps! I'm also going to towel dry it nicer.
